Analysis: NATO Pressure Fuels New Push for a European Union Army
Trump’s repeated criticism of NATO and Europe’s push for its own military force are being viewed by some analysts as part of a broader shift toward an EU-controlled defense structure.
Donald Trump has argued for years that NATO is outdated, too expensive for the United States, and not focused enough on modern threats such as terrorism.
His position has increased pressure on European governments to take more responsibility for their own defense, especially as doubts grow over whether Europe can continue relying on Washington as its main security guarantor.
Europe Moves Toward Its Own Defense Force
Supporters of deeper EU defense integration argue that Europe must be able to defend itself without depending entirely on the United States. Proposals have included the creation of a large EU force, expanded defense industry planning, drone defense systems, air defense projects, border monitoring, and space-based security programs.
The idea of an EU army is not new. France, Germany, and other European leaders have discussed defense integration for decades. Past proposals included joint command structures, shared border control, common defense planning, and stronger EU authority over military coordination.
NATO’s Role Under Pressure
The argument being made by critics is that NATO is not disappearing overnight, but is being weakened politically while Europe is pushed toward a Brussels-led military structure.
Under this view, NATO may still remain useful through Article 5 and other mechanisms, but its long-term role could shrink as EU defense institutions grow stronger.
The Bigger Question
The central question now is whether Europe is building real security independence or simply shifting military power from national governments into the hands of EU bureaucrats.
For Israel and other U.S. allies, the issue matters because a weaker American-led NATO could reshape global security and affect how the West confronts Russia, Iran, and terror-backed threats.
