A drone strike hit the perimeter area of the UAE’s Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi, setting fire to an electrical generator but causing no reported injuries or radiological release. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the UN nuclear watchdog condemned the attack, while no group immediately claimed responsibility.
A drone strike hit near the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, sparking a fire at an electrical generator outside the main facility.
Authorities said there were no injuries and no radiological release from the incident.
The United Arab Emirates condemned the strike as an unprovoked terrorist attack, while the International Atomic Energy Agency said it was seriously concerned by the targeting of nuclear-related infrastructure.
Two Other Drones Intercepted
According to the UAE Defense Ministry, three drones entered from the country’s western border with Saudi Arabia.
One drone struck near the Barakah plant, while two others were intercepted.
An official from Korea Electric Power Corporation, which operates the plant, said the nuclear facility itself did not appear to be directly hit and had not been damaged.
The IAEA said the fire affected an electrical generator and that one reactor was being powered by emergency diesel generators. UAE nuclear regulators said all units were operating normally and that plant safety was not affected.
UAE Points to Iran or Its Proxies
No organization immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash appeared to point toward Iran or one of its regional proxy groups, calling the strike a dangerous escalation whether carried out directly or through an agent.
Iran and its aligned militias have used drones and missiles throughout the wider regional conflict, including attacks on Gulf states.
Saudi Arabia Condemns Attack
Saudi Arabia condemned the strike, calling it a threat to regional security and stability.
Riyadh also said it intercepted three drones that entered from Iraqi airspace and warned it would take the necessary measures to defend its sovereignty.
The incident comes despite a ceasefire that has reduced parts of the wider Iran-related fighting, while drone activity from Iraq toward Gulf countries has continued.
Strategic Nuclear Facility
The Barakah nuclear plant was built with South Korean support and began operating in 2020.
It is the only nuclear power plant in the Arab world and can provide a major share of the UAE’s electricity needs.
The strike marks a serious escalation because it targeted the area around a nuclear facility, even though officials said the plant itself was not damaged and there was no radiation leak.
The attack highlights the growing threat of drone warfare across the region, especially as Iran-backed groups continue to pressure Gulf states, Israel, and American interests through missiles, drones, and proxy networks.
