Erdogan Reportedly Backs Plan to Remove Hezbollah’s Heavy Weapons From Lebanon

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have discussed a proposed arrangement that would seek the removal of Hezbollah’s heavy weapons from Lebanon, Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar reported.

Under the reported outline, Israel would be expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon and commit to refraining from further attacks.

In return, Hezbollah would be required to give up its heavy weapons, potentially addressing one of the central security threats facing Israel along its northern border.

Hezbollah, the Iran-backed terror organization that has maintained a major armed presence in Lebanon for decades, has not yet responded to the proposal.

The key question remains whether any agreement could actually enforce Hezbollah’s disarmament and prevent the terror group from rebuilding its military capabilities. Israel has repeatedly made clear that it cannot accept an armed Hezbollah threat operating along its northern frontier.
