G7 Welcomes U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Push, Says Iran Must Never Get Nuclear Weapons
G7 leaders welcomed the reported U.S.-Iran ceasefire framework while warning that any deal must block Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and reduce threats to regional security.
G7 leaders issued a joint statement welcoming efforts by the United States and Iran to move toward a ceasefire agreement, while making clear that Tehran must not be allowed to threaten the Middle East or develop nuclear weapons.
According to reports, the leaders backed follow-up negotiations between Washington and Tehran and said any agreement must include firm limits on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
A draft memorandum reportedly includes an immediate and permanent ceasefire, followed by 60 days of talks toward a final peace agreement. The draft also reportedly covers lifting a maritime blockade, restoring Iranian shipping, gradually easing economic sanctions, and supporting reconstruction efforts.
Iran would pledge not to develop nuclear weapons, while issues such as highly enriched uranium would be handled in later negotiations with the United States.
G7 leaders also said they are prepared to support the implementation of a ceasefire, including helping secure shipping if the Strait of Hormuz reopens. They also called for stronger global energy reserves and reduced dependence on routes vulnerable to Iranian pressure.
One major unresolved issue remains Lebanon. Iran is reportedly tying the ceasefire to Israeli military withdrawal from Lebanon, where Hezbollah terrorists continue to threaten Israel’s northern border.
G7 leaders called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon as well, but Israel cannot be expected to accept any arrangement that leaves Iran-backed terror forces free to rebuild on its doorstep.
