Hamas Appoints Khalil al-Hayya as New Political Leader Following Yahya Sinwar's Elimination

Hamas has announced the appointment of Khalil al-Hayya as the terrorist organization's new political leader, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was eliminated by Israeli forces in Gaza in October 2024. Al-Hayya, a longtime Hamas official, has played a central role in the group's leadership, hostage negotiations, and ceasefire talks during the war.

Hamas Names Khalil al-Hayya as New Leader

Hamas announced on Sunday that Khalil al-Hayya has been selected as the terror group's new political leader, succeeding Yahya Sinwar, who was eliminated by Israeli forces during an operation in Rafah, southern Gaza, in October 2024.

In an official statement, Hamas said al-Hayya had been chosen to head the organization's political bureau following Sinwar's death. Since Sinwar was eliminated, Hamas has reportedly been led by a five-member leadership committee that included al-Hayya.

Longtime Hamas Figure

Born in the Gaza Strip, al-Hayya has spent most of his life in Gaza and has been a senior Hamas official for decades. He was widely regarded as one of Sinwar's closest associates and a trusted member of the group's leadership.

Shortly before Hamas launched its October 7, 2023 terrorist attack against Israel, al-Hayya left Gaza for Qatar, where Hamas maintains its political bureau. Since October 2024, he has served as the organization's deputy political chief.

Role During the Gaza War

Al-Hayya survived an Israeli strike targeting Hamas's political leadership in Qatar last year. During the Gaza war, he led Hamas's side in hostage exchange negotiations with Israel and served as the group's chief representative in ceasefire discussions aimed at ending the conflict.

His appointment places one of Hamas's most experienced political figures at the head of the Iran-backed terrorist organization as it continues to face significant military and political pressure from Israel.
