Pakistan Pushes New Mediation Effort Between US and Iran
Pakistan’s interior minister is heading to Iran with new proposals aimed at keeping US-Iran talks alive and preventing the conflict from reigniting.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is expected to visit Iran on Saturday as Islamabad continues its mediation effort between Washington and Tehran.
Pakistani sources told Anadolu that Naqvi will meet senior Iranian officials to discuss new proposals aimed at breaking the current diplomatic deadlock and reaching a temporary understanding between the United States and Iran.
Message From Pakistan’s Army Chief
According to the report, Naqvi is carrying an important message from Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, to Iran’s Supreme Leader regarding Pakistan’s effort to push both sides toward a negotiated settlement.
The Pakistani minister is also expected to discuss the possibility of reviving another round of talks between the parties.
Talks Follow Regional Meetings
Naqvi returned from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, after attending a Shanghai Cooperation Organization meeting of interior ministers. Before leaving for Tehran, he reportedly met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who gave him special instructions regarding the US-Iran talks.
Iran’s Mehr news agency also reported that Naqvi would visit Iran as part of Islamabad’s ongoing mediation efforts.
Security Stakes Remain High
The visit comes after Naqvi met Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni on Friday in Bishkek.
Pakistan has been trying to broker a longer-term agreement after a ceasefire took effect on April 8. According to the report, talks in Islamabad later failed to produce a permanent deal, but both sides have continued trading proposals.
The wider concern for the region is clear: Iran’s regime remains a central backer of terror networks across the Middle East, and any diplomatic process must not allow Tehran to rebuild pressure on Israel or strengthen its proxies.
