Hezbollah Suffers Heavy Losses in Fighting With Israel
Hezbollah has suffered heavy losses since the latest campaign against Israel began in March. Sources cited by Reuters said thousands of Hezbollah terrorists have been killed, while official Lebanese figures list about 2,600 deaths. The report says many Hezbollah deaths have not been included in government numbers, and bodies of fighters in southern Lebanon have still not been recovered.
Hezbollah has suffered heavy losses since the current campaign against Israel began in March, according to a report citing sources familiar with the fighting.
Sources cited by Reuters said thousands of Hezbollah terrorists have been killed. That number is much higher than the official figure published by Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, which stands at about 2,600 deaths.
Sources within Hezbollah confirmed that the official government count does not include many of the group’s members who were killed in the fighting.
Fresh Graves Seen in Hezbollah-Controlled Beirut Suburbs
In the southern suburbs of Beirut, an area controlled by Hezbollah, more than twenty new graves of militants and commanders were reportedly seen. The graves were filled within days after the April ceasefire took effect.
A Hezbollah commander said the bodies of many fighters who operated in Bint Jbeil and al-Khiam have not yet been recovered from the battlefield.
Israel Continues Targeting Hezbollah Infrastructure
Israel has said it has eliminated thousands of Hezbollah terrorists and continues to destroy the terror group’s infrastructure.
Hezbollah’s Grip in Lebanon Weakens
According to the report, the war, which began two days after U.S. and Israeli strikes in Iran, has weakened Hezbollah’s grip inside Lebanon.
Political opposition to Hezbollah’s armed status is also growing in Beirut. Critics see Hezbollah as a force that keeps dragging Lebanon into repeated wars.
Last April, Lebanon’s government held face-to-face talks with Israel for the first time in decades. Hezbollah strongly opposed the move.
Hezbollah Looks to Regional Talks Despite Losses
Despite its heavy losses, Hezbollah reportedly believes its role in the fighting will push Washington and Tehran to include Lebanon in wider regional negotiations.
