IDF, Border Police Intervene After Huwara Clashes; Investigation Launched Into Violence and Soldier's Conduct
IDF and Border Police forces were dispatched earlier today to several locations near Huwara in Judea and Samaria after a report of suspected livestock theft involving animals belonging to Israeli civilians.
IDF and Border Police forces were dispatched earlier today to several locations near Huwara in Judea and Samaria after a report of suspected livestock theft involving animals belonging to Israeli civilians.
According to the IDF, soldiers worked to remove the Israeli civilians and the livestock from the area in order to prevent a confrontation.
Violent Clashes Break Out
Later, a number of rioters arrived at the scene, and violent clashes erupted between Israeli civilians and Palestinians. The confrontation included rock-throwing and the use of batons.
The IDF said it is aware of claims that several Palestinians were injured during the incident.
Israeli forces used riot dispersal measures to break up the disturbances. Security forces remain in the area to prevent further public disorder.
Police Investigation Opened
The Judea and Samaria District Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
The IDF said it strongly condemns violence that harms security in the area and pulls commanders and soldiers away from their main mission: protecting the area and carrying out counterterrorism operations.
Soldier’s Conduct Under Review
The IDF also said it is aware of footage showing an IDF soldier using violence against a Palestinian. The military called the actions shown in the video serious and inconsistent with IDF values.
The incident is now under review. Once the soldier is identified, he will face disciplinary proceedings, and command measures will be taken according to the findings.
