Iran Demands Release of Frozen Assets
A senior adviser to Iran’s supreme leader says nuclear talks with the US are stalled and demanded the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets as a condition for progress. He rejected a Trump-Khamenei summit and warned Iran could expand attacks if war resumes.
Iran has conditioned any future agreement with the United States on the release of $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets, according to Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei.
In an interview with CNN, Rezaei said negotiations between Tehran and Washington have stalled and argued that it is now up to President Donald Trump to move the process forward.
“The negotiations are at a deadlock,” Rezaei said, adding that “the ball is in Trump’s court.”
Iran Demands Release of Frozen Assets
According to Rezaei, Tehran wants $12 billion released immediately after an interim agreement is approved, with the remaining $12 billion to be transferred at a later stage.
Iran views the release of the funds as a test of American goodwill and trust. Rezaei insisted the money belongs to Iran and said unfreezing the assets would open the door to improved relations between the two countries.
US officials, however, have reportedly been reluctant to release the funds, believing the frozen assets remain one of Washington’s strongest sources of leverage in the negotiations.
Threats if Diplomacy Fails
Rezaei also issued warnings about the consequences of a renewed military confrontation.
He claimed that if hostilities resume, Iran could expand attacks beyond the Persian Gulf and target American interests across a wider region, including areas connected to major international shipping routes.
While making those threats, Rezaei also said he believes the likelihood of a new war remains low.
He further warned that if a ground conflict were ever launched against Iran, the country’s land forces would demonstrate capabilities beyond its missile arsenal.
Rezaei Rejects Possibility of Trump-Khamenei Meeting
Addressing recent comments from President Trump, who suggested he would be willing to meet Iran’s supreme leader, Rezaei dismissed the idea of a summit.
He said such a meeting is not currently possible, arguing that negotiations have been brought to a standstill and remain in an early stage.
Rezaei also questioned the reliability of any future agreement with Washington, pointing to Trump’s 2018 withdrawal from the Obama-era nuclear deal as a reason for Iranian skepticism.
Trump Says Progress Is Being Made
Despite Rezaei’s comments, President Trump has recently expressed optimism about the talks.
Speaking to reporters this week, Trump said negotiations appeared to be progressing well and suggested a deal could potentially be reached within days.
Trump stated that Iran is close to signing an agreement and reiterated his long-standing position that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
He also said he wants Iran’s enriched uranium transferred into US control as part of any future arrangement.
Nuclear Talks Continue
The United States and Iran have been engaged in indirect negotiations aimed at limiting Iran’s nuclear program and reducing regional tensions.
Despite multiple rounds of talks, no final agreement has been reached, and major disagreements remain over sanctions relief, nuclear restrictions, and the future relationship between the two countries.
