Iran Falsely Claims Control Over Transit Through the Strait of Hormuz
Iranian state media claims that vessels may use only routes approved by Tehran, but Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. forces have helped more than 800 commercial ships safely transit the international waterway since early May.
Iranian state media has been falsely claiming that passage through the Strait of Hormuz is allowed only along routes designated by Tehran.
Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz, a vital international trade corridor used to transport energy supplies and commercial goods around the world.
According to CENTCOM, U.S. forces have helped facilitate the successful transit of more than 800 commercial vessels through the strait since early May. Those ships carried approximately 380 million barrels of crude oil.
Tehran’s claim is another attempt to project control over a strategic waterway it does not own. The United States continues to protect freedom of navigation and the safe movement of international commerce.
