Iran-Launched Drones Target Kurdish Prime Minister’s Office in Iraq
Two explosive drones launched from across the Iranian border targeted the private office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani and the home of a senior intelligence official near Erbil. No casualties were reported.
Two explosive drones launched from Iranian territory targeted senior Kurdish leadership sites in northern Iraq early Monday, including the private office of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, Kurdish authorities said.
Barzani said an investigation by the Kurdistan Region’s counterterrorism authorities determined that his private office and the home of the region’s intelligence chief were targeted in the attack.
Drones Strike Near Erbil
Kurdish counterterrorism officials said two Hadid-110 explosive drones struck targets in Pirmam, roughly 20 kilometers northeast of Erbil. The targets were identified as Barzani’s private office and the home of the head of the Parastin intelligence service.
Authorities said the drones were launched from across the Iranian border. No casualties were reported.
It remains unclear who specifically carried out the attack.
Barzani Condemns Attack
Barzani condemned the strike as a dangerous escalation and a direct threat to the security and stability of Iraq’s Kurdish region.
“I condemn in the strongest terms this reckless and unacceptable act of aggression,” Barzani said.
The attack comes amid continued security threats facing Iraqi Kurdistan, where U.S. forces, foreign energy companies and Iranian opposition groups have maintained a presence.
Iranian Pressure on Kurdish Region
The Kurdish region has faced repeated attacks from Iran and Iran-aligned armed groups in Iraq since the conflict involving Iran intensified in late February. AFP reported that more than 1,000 attacks have targeted the region during that period.
Tehran has repeatedly accused Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations operating from Iraq of serving Western and Israeli interests, using those accusations to justify military pressure and strikes against targets in the Kurdish region.
Many Iranian opposition elements have reportedly abandoned positions in the area following repeated attacks. On July 17, drone and rocket strikes near Sulaymaniyah in eastern Kurdistan reportedly killed nine people.
Washington Had Considered Kurdish Role
The Trump administration considered involving Kurdish forces in operations connected to the conflict with Iran in March. Although signs of preparations were reported at the time, the plan was ultimately not carried out.
The latest drone strike underscores the continuing danger posed by Iranian and Iran-backed military activity beyond Iran’s borders, particularly in an Iraqi Kurdish region that has longstanding security ties with the United States and remains a frequent target of Tehran’s pressure.
