Iran Pushes for Sanctions Relief as Nuclear Inspection Dispute Clouds U.S.-Iran Deal
U.S. and Iranian officials left their Switzerland talks with major disagreements still unresolved, including frozen assets, IAEA nuclear inspections, oil sanctions, and Iran’s role in Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. and Iranian officials have ended high-level talks in Switzerland with deep disagreements still visible over the implementation of their ceasefire memorandum of understanding.
Iran claims Washington has agreed to release part of its frozen assets, including $12 billion, while U.S. officials say any sanctions relief must be tied to Iran’s nuclear commitments.
The dispute is also centered on International Atomic Energy Agency inspections. Vice President JD Vance said Iran agreed to allow IAEA inspectors back in, but Tehran denied making any new commitment. Iran’s Foreign Ministry said future access will depend on later negotiations.
IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said the agency must move quickly because the agreement reportedly includes a 60-day framework. He said the top priority is verifying the location of Iran’s highly enriched uranium.
There is also disagreement over how released Iranian funds may be used. President Trump said some of the money would return to the United States through agricultural purchases, but Iran’s central bank rejected any obligation to buy American farm products.
The talks also raised concern in Israel, especially over a reported mechanism involving Lebanon. Israeli officials fear any arrangement that strengthens Iran’s influence in Lebanon could undermine efforts to weaken Hezbollah.
Separately, Iran and Oman announced a joint committee to discuss restoring regular shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes.
The takeaway is clear: Iran is trying to secure economic relief while avoiding firm nuclear commitments. Israel and its allies will be watching closely to make sure Tehran does not use diplomacy as cover to rebuild its terror network and nuclear threat.
