Iran Threatens To Expand Maritime Pressure From Hormuz To The Red Sea
Iran is signaling a wider pressure campaign at sea, pointing to a new Iran-backed “resistance” belt stretching from the Strait of Hormuz to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, with the Houthis playing a key role.
Iran is openly signaling that it may try to expand its pressure campaign beyond the Strait of Hormuz and into the Red Sea, raising new concerns over global shipping, energy routes, and the fragile talks with the United States.
According to Iran’s semi-official Mehr News Agency, Esmail Qaani, commander of the IRGC Quds Force, wrote that the area from the Strait of Hormuz to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could become a new security belt for the so-called “resistance” axis.
Qaani praised the Yemen-based Houthis, an Iran-backed terror force, and suggested they could play a central role in pressuring Red Sea shipping. He also said others could join if needed, pointing to the possible use of additional Iran-backed forces.
Why Bab el-Mandeb Matters
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait links the Indian Ocean to the Red Sea and connects onward to the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean. It is one of the world’s most important shipping routes.
Roughly 12% of global seaborne trade passes through the route, along with a major share of international energy shipments. If Iran-backed forces threaten both Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, the impact on global energy markets could be severe.
The narrowest point of Bab el-Mandeb is only about 26 kilometers wide, making it vulnerable to disruption by a terror group like the Houthis if backed by Iran’s weapons, intelligence, and funding.
U.S.-Iran Talks Under Pressure
Iranian officials are also attacking the United States over what they describe as a maritime blockade. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran’s parliament speaker and a senior figure in talks, called the U.S. move a “war crime” and part of an enemy plot.
If Iran moves further with the Houthis in the Red Sea, it could seriously damage already fragile negotiations with Washington.
Israel Still Faces The Iranian Threat
The fighting between Iran and Israel may have paused for now, but the danger is far from over. Iran continues to threaten Israel, including over Israeli action in Lebanon against Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists.
Israel has only paused some strikes for now and has not ruled out further action. The core threat remains the same: Iran is using terror proxies across the region to pressure Israel, the United States, and global shipping lanes.
The takeaway is clear: Iran is not only threatening Israel directly. It is trying to turn key sea routes into weapons of pressure through its terror network.
