Iranian spectators turned the Iran-Belgium World Cup match in Los Angeles on Sunday into a public protest against the Islamic Republic.
Fans held up placards accusing the regime of carrying out a massacre after the nationwide anti-government uprising. One sign in English said more than 45,000 Iranians were killed by the Islamic Republic over two nights, January 8 and 9. Another sign in Farsi claimed that 40,000 people are missing.
Spectators also raised Iran's pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flags inside the stadium, openly defying a FIFA ban.
