Israel Signs $34M Deal With Elbit Subsidiary to Extend F-35 “Adir” Range
Israel’s Defense Ministry has signed a contract worth more than $34 million with Cyclone, a wholly owned Elbit Systems subsidiary, to develop extended-range capability for the F-35 “Adir” fighter jet. The project will adapt external fuel tank technology based on an existing Cyclone design originally built for the F-16.
The Israel Ministry of Defense has signed a new contract with Cyclone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems, to develop an extended-range capability for Israel’s F-35 “Adir” fighter jet.
The agreement was signed through the Defense Procurement Directorate and is valued at more than $34 million, or over NIS 100 million.
The F-35 “Adir” is manufactured by Lockheed Martin and serves as one of the Israeli Air Force’s most advanced fighter platforms.
External Fuel Tanks Based on Existing Cyclone Design
Under the deal, Cyclone will develop and integrate external fuel tanks for the F-35. The design will be based on an existing Cyclone system originally developed for the F-16.
The added fuel capacity is expected to increase the aircraft’s operational range, giving Israel’s F-35 fleet more flexibility on long-distance missions.
The new capability is also expected to reduce dependence on aerial refueling, which can be a critical factor during complex or extended operations.
Part of Israel’s Wider Force Buildup
The contract is part of the Defense Ministry’s broader force buildup plan, led by Defense Minister Israel Katz and Director General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram.
The ministry says the goal is to prepare Israel for a difficult security decade ahead while preserving the country’s aerial and strategic edge in the region.
By expanding the range and flexibility of the F-35 “Adir,” Israel is strengthening one of its most important long-range strike and defense assets at a time of rising regional threats.
Elbit Subsidiary Plays Key Role
Cyclone’s role in the project highlights the continued importance of Israel’s domestic defense industry in supporting the country’s most advanced military platforms.
For Israel, the deal brings together U.S.-made aircraft, Israeli defense engineering, and a clear operational need: giving the Air Force more reach, more independence, and more options in high-stakes missions.
