Mixed Sleeping Arrangements in Lebanon Spark Anger Among Soldiers’ Wives
A photo from Lebanon showing male and female IDF soldiers sleeping in the same room has triggered criticism from soldiers’ wives and religious groups, who say the arrangement violates religious standards and creates an unacceptable situation for observant troops.
A photo reportedly taken inside a house used by an IDF armored battalion in Lebanon has sparked backlash after it showed mixed-gender sleeping arrangements among soldiers.
The image shows a female soldier sleeping near male soldiers in adjacent beds. After the photo reached wives of soldiers serving in the unit, criticism quickly spread.
“I send my husband to fight and trust him 100%, but this is madness,” one soldier’s wife said, arguing that her husband was being placed in an unacceptable situation by being required to sleep in the same room beside a female soldier.
The group “Soldiers’ Wives for the Sanctity of the Camp,” part of the Chotam Organization, said the issue reflects a wider problem inside the IDF regarding mixed-gender service conditions in the field.
“The gender-mixing in the field has reached terrifying heights,” the group said, calling on elected officials and Defense Minister Israel Katz to act.
The group also argued that Israel cannot seriously discuss expanding haredi enlistment while religious soldiers are not guaranteed service conditions that meet halachic standards.
The controversy comes as Israeli forces continue security operations against Hezbollah terrorists in Lebanon, where soldiers are serving under difficult battlefield conditions far from home.
