NYPD: Anti-Jewish Hate Crimes Made Up Nearly 70% of New York City's Confirmed July Bias Incidents

New NYPD data shows anti-Jewish hate crimes rose sharply in July, accounting for nearly 70% of all confirmed hate crimes in New York City. Jewish residents, who make up about 10% of the city's population, remained the primary target of bias-related offenses as officials warned that antisemitism continues to rise.

New York City police statistics show that anti-Jewish hate crimes surged in July, making up nearly 70% of all confirmed bias-related incidents across the five boroughs.

According to NYPD data cited by JNS, authorities confirmed 33 hate crimes during the month, with 23 targeting Jewish victims. That represents a 53.3% increase compared to July 2025, when 15 anti-Jewish incidents were verified.

Jewish Community Remains Primary Target

Although Jewish residents account for roughly one-tenth of New York City's population, they were the victims in nearly 70% of all confirmed hate crimes during July.

The NYPD also confirmed five anti-Muslim hate crimes during the month, up from two recorded during the same period last year.

Reporting System Updated Earlier This Year

Earlier in 2026, the city adjusted its hate crime reporting procedures after a sharp increase in anti-Jewish incidents at the beginning of the year. Officials temporarily reported only verified hate crimes before introducing a dual reporting system that separately tracks reported complaints and confirmed cases.

For July, police received 50 bias complaints, including 29 involving alleged anti-Jewish incidents and six involving alleged anti-Muslim incidents. Investigations remain ongoing for complaints that have not yet been verified.

Year-to-Date Numbers Continue to Rise

Since the beginning of 2026, the NYPD has confirmed 360 hate crimes citywide, a 9.4% increase over the same period in 2025.

205 confirmed anti-Jewish incidents (56.9% of all verified hate crimes), up 8.5% from 189 last year.
26 confirmed anti-Muslim incidents (7.2% of all verified hate crimes), up from 16 during the same period in 2025.

City Leaders Voice Concern

New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin expressed alarm over the continuing rise in antisemitic attacks.

"I remain deeply concerned and very troubled by the unacceptable spike in hate crimes, particularly driven by those targeting Jewish New Yorkers," Menin said.

Menin said combating antisemitism became her first policy priority after taking office, pointing to a five-point plan aimed at protecting Jewish communities and fighting hate across the city.
