Senate Narrowly Blocks Iran War Powers Resolution After Fetterman Breaks Ranks
The Senate narrowly rejected a resolution that would have limited President Donald Trump’s authority to order further military action in Iran without congressional approval.
The U.S. Senate narrowly blocked a Democratic-led effort to restrict President Donald Trump’s war powers regarding Iran.
The measure would have required explicit approval from Congress before any additional U.S. combat operations could move forward in the region.
The motion failed in a close 47-48 vote. Senator John Fetterman broke with Democrats and voted against advancing the resolution.
Four Republicans — Rand Paul, Bill Cassidy, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins — crossed party lines and supported the measure.
The vote was the Senate’s ninth formal debate this year on an Iran-related war powers resolution. Most efforts have failed, though one resolution advanced last month in a 50-47 vote.
Earlier this month, the House approved a similar measure by a 215-208 vote after several failed attempts. Four Republicans — Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson — voted with Democrats to limit Trump’s authority.
The fight highlights a sharp divide in Washington over presidential power, congressional oversight, and America’s role in confronting the Iranian threat.
