Syria Intercepts Rocket Shipment Bound for Hezbollah, Blocks Major Weapons Smuggling Operation
Syrian authorities announced they intercepted a truck loaded with rockets and advanced weapons that was allegedly headed to Hezbollah in Lebanon. The seizure took place near the Iraqi border as Damascus continues tightening security against weapons smuggling following the fall of the Assad regime.
Syrian authorities announced that they intercepted a truck carrying rockets and advanced weapons that was reportedly destined for the Iran-backed Hezbollah terror group in Lebanon.
According to Syria's state-run SANA news agency, citing an Interior Ministry official, the truck was stopped near the Iraqi border during an operation targeting weapons smuggling networks.
Officials said an initial investigation found that the shipment's final destination was Hezbollah in Lebanon. The truck was reportedly loaded with rockets and other high-performance weapons before being seized by Syrian security forces.
Crackdown on Smuggling Networks
Since the removal of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in 2024, the government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa has increased efforts to combat weapons and narcotics smuggling along Syria's border regions.
The border areas shared by Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon have long served as key supply routes for Iran-backed terrorist organizations, including Hezbollah, allowing weapons and logistical support to move across the region.
Iraq Launches Joint Investigation
Iraq's Joint Operations Command announced that it has formed a committee to investigate the suspected smuggling operation. Iraqi authorities said they will coordinate with Syrian officials, although additional details have not yet been released.
Regional Security Pressure
President Donald Trump has repeatedly called on the Syrian government to take military action against Hezbollah and has also continued urging Iraq to disarm Iranian-backed militias operating within its borders.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa has stated that his government is working to prevent Syria from being drawn into a wider regional conflict.
Hezbollah had not issued an official response to the reported weapons seizure at the time of publication.
