The Rothschild family has long been the subject of conspiracy theories that often turn into antisemitism.
The logic usually goes like this: The Rothschilds run the Deep State and own the U.S. Federal Reserve → Jews control the world → therefore Jews are evil and responsible for everything.
This narrative has circulated for more than a century, from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a forgery linked to Russia’s Okhrana, to Nazi propaganda claiming Nathan Rothschild spread false rumors that Britain had lost the Battle of Waterloo so he could buy British bonds cheaply.
The problem is that these theories mix fragments of truth with much larger falsehoods. The Waterloo rumor was propaganda, but the Rothschild family did make a great deal of money during the battle. Victor Rothschild’s 1984 book, Random Variables, devotes an entire chapter to estimating how much the family may have earned from bond investments during the Battle of Waterloo. Likewise, The Protocols was a fabrication, but the Rothschilds did exert enormous influence over global finance, particularly in the development of central banking and the adoption of the gold standard. Since the 1950s, members of the Rothschild family have also appeared on the Steering Committee of the Bilderberg Meeting, a secret gathering of political and business elites from Europe and North America.
That mixture of fact and fiction has helped inflate claims about Jewish power.
The Rothschild family must be separated from Jews as a whole. Some members, including Walter and Edmond de Rothschild, were major supporters of Zionism and the establishment of Israel. Others were hostile, cynical, or held very different political views.
The family was never a unified political bloc. The British and French branches competed for years, while Victor Rothschild and Evelyn de Rothschild fought for influence within the British branch.
A similar pattern can be seen within the Rockefeller family. Nelson Rockefeller, David Rockefeller, and John D. Rockefeller III also had complicated relationships marked by both cooperation and rivalry.
Some conspiracy narratives ignore these divisions and reduce everything to a single conclusion: “Jews are the problem. Jews are evil. Jews control the world.”
