Trump Announces Iran Agreed to Highest-Level Nuclear Inspections as Negotiations Advance
President Donald Trump announced that Iran has agreed to long-term, high-level nuclear inspections as part of ongoing negotiations. He also said the US will keep the Strait of Hormuz open, provide tightly controlled humanitarian sanctions relief, and continue talks toward a broader agreement, while Iranian officials disputed parts of the US account.
President Donald Trump announced that Iran has agreed to what he described as the highest level of long-term nuclear inspections, calling the move a major step toward ensuring transparency over Tehran's nuclear program.
In a statement, Trump said the inspections would guarantee 'nuclear honesty' and emphasized that negotiations would not have continued without Iran's agreement to enhanced monitoring.
Hormuz Strait to Remain Open
Trump also said he has agreed not to impose a naval blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, allowing one of the world's most important shipping lanes to remain open. He noted that US naval forces will stay in position and could quickly restore a blockade if circumstances change, although he said that currently appears unlikely.
Humanitarian Sanctions Relief
According to Trump, any sanctions relief approved by the United States will remain under US-controlled escrow accounts. He said the funds will be used exclusively to purchase humanitarian goods from American suppliers, including food and agricultural products such as corn, wheat, and soybeans from US farmers.
Trump described the arrangement as humanitarian assistance aimed at addressing urgent needs inside Iran while maintaining strict oversight of the funds.
Iran Disputes Parts of the US Position
Iranian officials challenged parts of the US announcement. A spokesperson for Iran's Foreign Ministry said Tehran had not held talks with International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi in Switzerland and that there were no current plans for UN inspectors to visit Iran's damaged nuclear facilities.
Iran also maintained that once its frozen assets are released, Tehran alone will determine how those funds are used.
Negotiations Continue
Despite the differing public statements, Trump expressed optimism about the negotiations, saying discussions toward a comprehensive agreement covering Iran's nuclear program and other outstanding issues are progressing well.
