Trump: Iran Will Never Have Nuclear Weapons, Warns of 'Hellish Consequences' for Violations
President Donald Trump reiterated that Iran will not be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons under the new memorandum of understanding, warning that any attempt to do so would bring severe consequences. He also said he does not seek regime change in Iran, expects the country’s reconstruction to take years, and voiced concerns about recent Israeli strikes in Lebanon.
U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed that Iran will not be permitted to possess nuclear weapons under the recently signed memorandum of understanding (MOU), warning that any violation would trigger devastating consequences.
Speaking on June 16 during the second day of the G7 Summit, Trump made the remarks during a meeting with Qatar's Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and later during a question-and-answer session with reporters.
Trump stated that one of his key conditions for signing the agreement was a guarantee that Iran would never develop, purchase, or acquire nuclear weapons in any form.
'Iran will never have a nuclear weapon. They will not develop one, buy one, or take any action toward obtaining one,' Trump said.
He warned that if Iran attempted to violate the agreement and pursue nuclear weapons, it would face what he described as severe and unprecedented consequences.
Trump also said the agreement has now entered what he called 'Phase Two,' adding that he believes the next stage of implementation may be easier than the first.
The president stressed that the United States would not be investing money in Iran following the memorandum and maintained that future negotiations would focus on recovering Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles.
Trump Rejects Regime Change in Iran
Trump said he believes Iran now has a more rational leadership structure and made clear that he does not support efforts to overthrow the Iranian regime.
At the same time, he predicted that rebuilding Iran would take many years following the damage and instability caused by recent events.
Comments on Israel and Lebanon
Trump also addressed Israel's recent military actions in Lebanon. He said he expressed concerns to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding Israeli airstrikes in Beirut.
According to Trump, he told Netanyahu that Israel should act more responsibly regarding developments in Lebanon moving forward.
Despite those comments, Trump dismissed reports of tensions between the two leaders and said his relationship with Netanyahu remains very strong.
The remarks come as regional tensions continue to center on Iran's nuclear ambitions, Hezbollah's presence in Lebanon, and broader security concerns across the Middle East.
