President Donald Trump said the ceasefire understanding with Iran appears to be over after renewed attacks near the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian strikes on U.S. facilities in the Gulf. Oil prices jumped, markets fell, and Trump also blasted NATO allies for failing to stand firmly with America during the Iran conflict.
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the ceasefire memorandum of understanding with Iran “looks finished,” following a new wave of violence around the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking in Ankara during the NATO summit alongside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump said he no longer wants to deal with Iran and accused the regime of lying throughout the negotiation process.
“I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore,” Trump said, according to reports.
The comments came after reports that commercial vessels, including tankers, were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. Central Command responded with strikes on more than 80 Iranian targets, including air defense systems, command facilities, and radar sites.
Iran Retaliates Against U.S. Facilities
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it struck U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait in response. Iranian officials also warned of a “deadly response” after Washington revoked a temporary license allowing Iranian oil production, delivery, and sales.
Trump said Iran cannot be trusted, especially on nuclear issues, and warned that the regime would use nuclear weapons if it obtained them.
Markets React, Oil Prices Surge
The renewed fighting immediately hit global markets. Brent crude jumped more than 6%, approaching $80 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate also climbed sharply. U.S. stock futures fell, and Asian technology shares came under pressure as investors reacted to the rising risk of a wider Middle East war.
Trump Blasts NATO Allies
Trump also criticized NATO members for failing to give America meaningful military support during the Iran conflict. He singled out several European allies and said the United States has spent huge sums defending Europe while Europe failed to stand with America when it mattered.
Trump was especially harsh toward Spain, calling it a poor NATO partner, and again raised the possibility of reducing the U.S. military presence in Europe if allies refuse to carry their share of the burden.
