Trump Comments on Iran
According to a report, President Donald Trump said he is closely watching the funeral proceedings for former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Speaking in a phone interview with Axios on Friday, Trump said Iran wanted negotiations and was given a week to conduct the funeral ceremonies.
"Iran desperately wanted to negotiate, so they were given a week to hold the funeral," Trump said, according to the report.
Trump also said Iran's leadership was gathered in one place, adding that they could have been targeted militarily but that doing so would leave no one to negotiate with.
Remarks on the Funeral
Referring to images of mourners attending the funeral, Trump said he was surprised to see emotional crowds, adding that he had believed many Iranians disliked Khamenei. He also suggested that some of the public displays of grief could have been staged.
