Trump Says Iran Will Not Charge Ships to Pass Through Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump said Iran has informed him that ships will not face tolls, insurance costs, or other charges to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global oil traffic.
President Donald Trump said Wednesday that Iran told him there will be no tolls, insurance costs, or other charges for vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy routes, with a major share of global oil traffic moving through the narrow waterway between Iran and Oman. Any attempt by Iran to use it as leverage threatens the world with higher oil prices and another dangerous energy shock.
“No money has been given to Iran, or released from their money to them, by the U.S.,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Trump said some Iranian-controlled funds would instead be used to buy American agricultural products, including corn, wheat, and soybeans, to help provide food for Iran.
Iran has not yet publicly responded to Trump’s remarks.
The statement comes after the U.S. and Iran reportedly signed an interim agreement aimed at ending the conflict. Under the memorandum, both sides agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz toll-free for at least 60 days and end hostilities, including fighting involving Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Republican lawmakers have raised concerns about parts of the deal, warning that any agreement with Tehran must not reward the regime or allow Iran to continue threatening global security.
Oil prices moved lower Wednesday, with Brent crude and U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures both falling nearly 3%.
The bottom line is clear: Iran must keep the Strait of Hormuz open permanently, without tolls, threats, or blackmail. The world cannot afford another oil crisis triggered by the Iranian regime.
