According to CNN, Trump made the declaration in a Truth Social post responding to reported comments from New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who said his administration would consider arresting Netanyahu during a future visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
“Prime Minister Netanyahu will not be arrested under any circumstances or in any way while he is in the United States,” Trump said, according to the report.
Trump said Netanyahu is confronting the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has supported terror groups across the Middle East and has been responsible for attacks targeting Americans, Israelis, and others for decades.
He argued that Iranian leaders responsible for years of violence and destruction should face accountability—not the prime minister of Israel.
Trump also criticized previous U.S. administrations for failing to deal with the Iranian threat earlier.
Mamdani reportedly repeated allegations that Netanyahu should be held responsible for alleged war crimes in Gaza. He cited the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court in November 2024.
Israel rejects the allegations and has strongly disputed the ICC’s jurisdiction and conduct. The United States is not a member of the ICC, and the court does not have its own police force to carry out arrests.
Mamdani also reportedly said Netanyahu belongs in The Hague, where the ICC is based.
Trump’s statement sends a direct message that America will not allow an allied Israeli leader to be detained while Israel is fighting Iran and Iran-backed terror organizations.
The reported dispute highlights the sharp divide between pro-Israel leaders who support Israel’s right to defend itself and progressive politicians seeking to use international institutions against the Jewish state.
CNN said it could not independently confirm the Iranian protest death toll cited by Trump. A U.S.-based Iranian human-rights organization has separately reported thousands of deaths and said additional cases remain under investigation.
