President Trump’s renewed push to release UFO and UAP-related files has drawn massive public attention. Supporters say Americans deserve transparency, while critics argue the timing may also serve a political purpose amid pressure at home and rising space competition with China and Russia. While experts say the newly released files provide no proof of extraterrestrial life, the disclosures have also revived attention to the extraordinary claims made by former Canadian Defense Minister Paul Hellyer, who spent years arguing that governments were withholding information about UFOs and possible alien civilizations.
Trump Continues UFO Disclosure Effort
President Donald Trump has again put UFO and UAP disclosure in the spotlight, saying his administration plans to release as many related files as possible in the near future. Trump is the latest U.S. president to authorize the release of government UFO records, continuing a disclosure effort that dates back to the late 1970s.
The issue gained new attention after the U.S. Department of Defense released video last month showing unexplained aerial objects captured by military systems. The footage reportedly included strange objects with unusual shapes and movements, along with hundreds of older files tied to unexplained sightings.
Trump has repeatedly signaled support for greater transparency on the issue.
"We're going to be releasing as much as we can," Trump said earlier this year, adding that some of the information would be highly interesting to the public.
The UFO issue has attracted enormous public attention in the United States, where surveys consistently show that millions of Americans believe intelligent extraterrestrial life may exist. Analysts have also noted that UFO disclosures can generate widespread media coverage and potentially shift public attention away from other political controversies.
At the same time, the discussion has become intertwined with America's broader ambitions in space. Trump has repeatedly emphasized plans for future Moon missions and eventual human missions to Mars as the United States competes with China and Russia in the growing space race.
Paul Hellyer: The Former Defense Minister Who Said UFOs Are Real
The renewed disclosure effort has also revived interest in one of the most outspoken government officials ever to discuss UFOs publicly: former Canadian Defense Minister Paul Hellyer (August 6, 1923 – August 8, 2021).
Hellyer served as Canada's Minister of National Defence during the 1960s and oversaw major reforms of the Canadian military. He later claimed that while serving in office he paid little attention to UFO reports because he was focused on military restructuring and defense policy.
According to Hellyer, his views changed years later after receiving extensive UFO-related research materials from a young researcher who believed he would eventually recognize the significance of the issue.
Hellyer said he left the material untouched for years before finally reviewing it in detail during the summer of 2005. What he read, he claimed, dramatically altered his perspective.
He later said he concluded that the public had a right to know what governments had learned about UFOs and that the issue was far more important than most people realized.
At a symposium held at the University of Toronto on September 25, 2005, Hellyer made headlines by publicly declaring:
"UFOs are as real as the airplanes flying overhead."
The statement made him one of the highest-ranking former government officials in the Western world to openly endorse the existence of UFOs.
Hellyer also told attendees that he had personally witnessed a UFO alongside his late wife and several friends.
Claims of Multiple Alien Civilizations
During a 2014 interview with RT, Hellyer went even further, claiming that at least four different extraterrestrial species had been visiting Earth for thousands of years. He alleged that most originated from other star systems, while also asserting that some extraterrestrial beings were connected to locations within our own solar system, including Venus, Mars, and one of Saturn’s moons.
According to Hellyer, the public often makes the mistake of referring to aliens as if they were a single group. He insisted that multiple species existed and that each possessed its own objectives, interests, and agendas.
He compared the situation to international relations on Earth, arguing that different extraterrestrial groups could have differing goals in the same way that countries such as the United States, Russia, and China pursue different strategic interests.
Hellyer further claimed that some extraterrestrial beings were not merely historical visitors but were actively present on Earth today.
Among his most controversial assertions was the claim that at least two alien species maintained cooperative relationships with elements of the U.S. government.
No publicly verified evidence has ever been produced to support those claims.
The "Tall Whites" Allegation
One of the extraterrestrial groups Hellyer frequently discussed was a race known among UFO researchers as the "Tall Whites."
Hellyer cited the testimony of Charles Hall, a former U.S. Air Force serviceman who claimed to have encountered these beings while stationed near military facilities in Nevada.
According to Hall's account, which Hellyer publicly endorsed, the Tall Whites lived near restricted military areas and gradually developed cooperative relationships with American personnel.
Hellyer claimed these beings may have quietly assisted in technological development projects and maintained contact with U.S. authorities for years.
These allegations remain unverified and have never been confirmed by the U.S. government.
Calls for "Full Disclosure"
Throughout the final years of his life, Hellyer became a vocal advocate for what UFO researchers call "full disclosure."
He argued that governments should release the vast majority of information they possess regarding UFOs, extraterrestrial life, and advanced technologies.
Hellyer suggested that approximately 95 to 98 percent of relevant information could be safely disclosed to the public, though he acknowledged that certain sensitive details might require temporary classification.
He frequently argued that humanity would eventually have to accept a new reality: that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe and that Earth may not be as isolated as many people assume.
According to Hellyer, revealing this information would fundamentally change humanity's understanding of its place in the cosmos.
Controversial Claims About Secret Power Structures
Beyond UFOs themselves, Hellyer also made broader allegations regarding global power structures.
He argued that powerful networks involving financial institutions, intelligence agencies, defense interests, and international organizations had helped suppress information related to UFOs and advanced technologies.
He claimed these groups exerted significant influence behind the scenes and worked to prevent full public disclosure.
These claims have never been substantiated and are widely disputed by mainstream historians, academics, and government officials.
No Confirmed Evidence
Despite decades of speculation, neither the latest U.S. government disclosures nor previous Pentagon investigations have produced confirmed evidence of extraterrestrial life.
American defense officials continue to investigate unexplained aerial incidents, but official reports have repeatedly stated that many cases remain unresolved because of insufficient data rather than proof of alien activity.
Still, as more government records become public and public curiosity continues to grow, figures like Paul Hellyer remain central to one of the most enduring mysteries of the modern era: whether governments know more about UFOs than they have revealed—and whether humanity is truly alone in the universe.
