U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) carried out a coordinated wave of precision strikes against Iranian military targets on the morning of July 15, beginning at approximately 6:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
According to CENTCOM, the operation concluded around 7:30 a.m. after a 90-minute campaign targeting coastal defense systems as well as cruise missile storage and launch facilities located on Greater Tunb Island.
Targeting Iran's Military Capabilities
U.S. officials said the strikes were specifically aimed at reducing Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime trade routes.
The targeted military infrastructure has reportedly been used by Iranian forces to support attacks and threats against international shipping operating in the region.
Strategic Waterway
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global chokepoint through which a significant portion of the world's energy supplies transit each day. Military activity in the area has long raised concerns over regional security and the safety of international commerce.
CENTCOM stated that the latest operation further degraded Iran's capability to launch attacks against commercial vessels operating in the strategic waterway.
