Why Iran Chose Jordan: Missiles Over the Hashemite Kingdom Raise Fears of a Wider Regional War
Iranian missiles crossed Jordanian airspace during Tehran's retaliation against U.S. military targets, triggering nationwide air raid sirens and prompting Jordan's military to intercept multiple projectiles. While the apparent target was U.S. forces in the region, the incident underscores Jordan's strategic importance and the growing danger that neighboring countries could become entangled in the escalating confrontation between Iran and the United States.
Air raid sirens sounded across Jordan after missiles launched from Iran entered the kingdom's airspace during Tehran's latest wave of attacks against U.S. military positions in the Middle East.
According to Jordanian officials cited by Reuters and the Jordan News Agency, the Jordanian Armed Forces immediately raised their alert level and intercepted multiple incoming missiles. State media reported that eight Iranian missiles were successfully shot down, with no casualties reported.
Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad Al-Momani said the military remains at its highest level of readiness and is prepared to respond to any threat against the kingdom's security.
Regional Conflict Expands
The missile launches came as Iran carried out retaliatory strikes following U.S. military operations, targeting American installations across the region. Air raid warnings were also reported in Bahrain, Kuwait, and Qatar.
Kuwait's Defense Ministry said its air defense systems intercepted three ballistic missiles, one cruise missile, and ten drones. One person was reportedly injured by falling debris.
Why Did Iran's Missiles Pass Through Jordan?
Initial assessments suggest Jordan itself was not the primary target. The missiles were likely intended for U.S. military assets located elsewhere in the region, with their flight paths crossing Jordanian airspace due to geography.
Jordan occupies a critical position between Israel, Iraq, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, making it a natural transit corridor for missiles fired toward American bases. The kingdom also hosts U.S. military personnel and maintains close security cooperation with both Washington and Israel, making its airspace strategically significant during any regional conflict.
Although Jordan is not a direct participant in the confrontation, it has repeatedly intercepted missiles and drones crossing its territory to protect its sovereignty and civilian population. This reflects Amman's determination to prevent its territory from becoming a battlefield while maintaining regional stability.
Growing Regional Risks
The latest incident demonstrates how rapidly the conflict between Iran and the United States can spill beyond its immediate participants. As missiles and drones traverse neighboring countries, the likelihood of miscalculation, accidental casualties, and broader regional escalation continues to increase.
