Larry Sanger, one of Wikipedia's co-founders, has become one of its most outspoken critics. According to Sanger, Wikipedia no longer operates according to the principles that guided its creation. Instead of encouraging multiple viewpoints and open debate, he believes the platform has evolved into a system where ideological conformity often outweighs genuine neutrality.

Sanger recently attempted to launch the "Wiki Project Intellectual Diversity," an initiative intended to encourage broader representation of differing viewpoints across Wikipedia articles. Rather than receiving support, the effort ended with Sanger being permanently banned from editing the encyclopedia.

Claims of Ideological Bias

Sanger argues that Wikipedia's Neutral Point of View policy has gradually changed over the years. While it was originally designed to fairly represent competing viewpoints, he believes editors increasingly decide which opinions are considered acceptable and which should be excluded.

He also criticizes Wikipedia's growing reliance on so-called "reliable sources" lists, claiming that mainstream media organizations receive preferential treatment while many conservative or alternative publications are effectively excluded from citation. According to Sanger, this creates an environment where certain facts or perspectives rarely appear unless approved by a narrow range of media outlets.

Anonymous Administrators and Accountability

Another major concern raised by Sanger involves Wikipedia's anonymous administrator system. He argues that individuals with significant influence over editorial decisions often operate without meaningful public accountability. In his view, dispute resolution has become increasingly political, with administrators exercising broad authority over discussions, content decisions, and user sanctions.

Sanger has also questioned whether Wikipedia's internal consensus process truly reflects open debate, arguing that organized editor groups can dominate discussions and marginalize dissenting voices.

Calls for Reform

To address these concerns, Sanger has proposed several reforms, including allowing competing articles that present different viewpoints, improving transparency, expanding public participation in article evaluations, limiting indefinite user bans, and restoring what he describes as genuine intellectual diversity.

Recognizing the challenges of reforming Wikipedia from within, Sanger has also supported alternative knowledge projects such as Encyclosphere, which aim to encourage greater competition in online reference materials.
