Zohran Mamdani Compares Himself to Nelson Mandela Amid Renewed Criticism Over Anti-Israel Record
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani compared the criticism he faces over his anti-Israel positions to the scrutiny Nelson Mandela encountered for supporting the Palestinian cause. The remarks have renewed debate over Mamdani's history of anti-Israel statements, his refusal to reject the phrase "globalize the intifada," and his actions affecting New York City's policies on Israel and antisemitism.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani drew comparisons between his own political experience and that of former South African President Nelson Mandela during a keynote speech at a Nelson Mandela Foundation leadership event.
According to remarks reported by JNS, Mamdani referenced a past television interview in which journalist Ted Koppel questioned Mandela about whether his support for the Palestinian cause could alienate Jewish supporters. Mamdani argued that Mandela rejected the premise of the question and suggested he has faced similar criticism because of his own views on Israel.
"It is also a question that rings familiar... whether opposing Israeli war crimes somehow makes you hateful toward a people," Mamdani said.
Mamdani praised Mandela for refusing what he described as political pressure to abandon his principles, saying that maintaining long-held beliefs is often more difficult than making concessions.
Calls for Palestinian Cause
During his speech, Mamdani urged international attention to the ongoing conflict in Gaza and called for support for what he described as Palestinian freedom, questioning how much more suffering should occur before greater action is taken.
Record of Anti-Israel Controversies
Mamdani has faced repeated criticism from pro-Israel leaders and Jewish organizations over his positions on Israel.
He declined to disavow the slogan "globalize the intifada" during his political campaign.
He criticized Israel on October 8, 2023, one day after the Hamas terrorist massacre in southern Israel.
He has repeatedly accused Israel of committing war crimes during its military campaign against Hamas terrorists in Gaza.
He pledged that he would seek to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to visit New York City.
After taking office, he rescinded executive orders recognizing the IHRA working definition of antisemitism and another discouraging city officials from participating in boycotts and divestment efforts targeting Israel.
He has also questioned Israel's right to exist as the nation-state of the Jewish people and recently referred to AIPAC and its supporters as "monsters."
Growing Political Debate
Mamdani's latest remarks are expected to intensify criticism from supporters of Israel, who argue that his rhetoric and policy decisions undermine efforts to combat antisemitism while straining relations with New York City's large Jewish community.
