China Urges Iran and the United States to Honor Ceasefire MOU and Resume Talks
China is calling for renewed diplomacy between Iran and the United States, urging both sides to implement the previously signed ceasefire memorandum of understanding (MOU) and return to negotiations. During a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi warned that the agreement should not be abandoned and stressed that dialogue remains the best path toward regional stability.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on July 24 while attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kyrgyzstan, according to China's Foreign Ministry.
During the meeting, Wang expressed deep concern over rising tensions in the Middle East and the Gulf region. He said the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last month represents an important achievement of multilateral diplomacy and reflects the desire for peace in Iran and across the region.
"The door to open negotiations must not be closed again, and as long as there is hope for peace, efforts should not be abandoned," Wang said, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Wang emphasized that the immediate priority is maintaining a diplomatic approach to resolving disputes while implementing the commitments outlined in the MOU. He also called for the prompt resumption of dialogue between the parties, appropriate management of issues related to the Strait of Hormuz, improved relations among neighboring countries, and stronger collective security cooperation among Gulf states.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Wang that recent regional tensions escalated because, according to Tehran, the United States violated the terms of the agreement. He reiterated that Iran remains committed to negotiations and does not seek prolonged conflict, while urging Washington to fulfill its commitments and pursue what he described as a reasonable solution.
Araghchi also stressed the importance of closer communication and coordination between Iran and China during what he called a critical period, expressing hope that Beijing would continue playing a constructive role in easing regional tensions.
