The Nordic Myth: What Bernie Sanders and AOC Leave Out About Europe’s Favorite Welfare States
For years, Bernie Sanders and other American progressives have pointed to Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland as proof that a much larger welfare state can deliver prosperity, equality and security. But the Nordic model is far more complicated than the political sales pitch heard in the United States. These countries are not socialist command economies. They are highly competitive capitalist economies built on private property, open markets, high employment, broad taxation, fiscal discipline and, in several cases, labor markets that are more flexible than many Americans realize.
