Iran Mocks Scott Bessent After Claim of $1 Billion Cryptocurrency Seizure
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei mocked U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after he claimed the United States had seized approximately $1 billion in Iranian cryptocurrency assets.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei mocked U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after he claimed the United States had seized approximately $1 billion in Iranian cryptocurrency assets.
Speaking at the Reagan National Economic Forum last month, Bessent said U.S. authorities had taken control of Iranian-linked digital wallets as part of Washington’s efforts to target Tehran’s financial networks.
"Just outright grabbed the wallets. Some of them may be typing in right now and might not realize that their wallet has been grabbed," Bessent said.
In response, Baqaei shared a video of Bessent’s remarks on social media and accompanied it with a quote from William Shakespeare’s Macbeth:
"Now does he feel his title Hang loose about him, like a giant's robe Upon a dwarfish thief."
The line from Shakespeare’s tragedy is used to describe Macbeth after he seizes power by murdering the king. The phrase "dwarfish thief" suggests someone who lacks the legitimacy and moral stature to hold the position they have taken. By posting the quote, Baqaei appeared to ridicule Bessent and criticize the U.S. action against Iranian assets.
The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran over sanctions, financial restrictions, and efforts by the United States to disrupt Iranian funding channels, including cryptocurrency networks.
