Iran Sends Mixed Signals as U.S. Says Qatar Talks Are Set
Iran’s president says Tehran will honor its commitments if the United States upholds the agreement, while Iranian officials deny that any direct negotiations with Washington are scheduled this week despite President Trump saying a Qatar meeting is planned.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran will continue to follow its commitments only if the United States does the same, as Washington and Tehran give conflicting accounts over whether new talks are taking place in Qatar.
Posting on X, Pezeshkian said that if the American side respects the agreement, Iran will also fulfill its obligations. He added that mutual understanding “is not a one-way street.”
“If action is required, we will respond firmly and without hesitation,” Pezeshkian said, while warning against what he called baseless complaints and threats.
U.S. Says Talks Are Planned, Iran Pushes Back
President Donald Trump said on Truth Social that a meeting was expected in Doha, Qatar, on June 30 at Iran’s request. U.S. officials also indicated that senior figures, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were expected to take part.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry denied that any negotiation meeting with the United States was scheduled this week. Spokesman Esmail Baghaei said an Iranian delegation’s Qatar visit was unrelated to any American delegation and was meant to review implementation of the memorandum of understanding, including the issue of frozen Iranian assets.
Hormuz Tensions Remain Central
The dispute follows recent military exchanges after a Singapore-flagged vessel reported being attacked near the Strait of Hormuz. The United States and Iran later agreed to stop mutual attacks, but the two sides remain divided over whether broader negotiations are resuming.
The Trump administration is presenting the Qatar track as a possible diplomatic opening, while Iran is insisting that key parts of the agreement must be implemented first.
