Rubio Warns Iran Will Pay a Heavy Price as War of Words Escalates

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi traded sharp warnings after President Donald Trump threatened military retaliation for Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

A public war of words between the United States and Iran escalated after President Donald Trump warned that Washington would strike Iranian infrastructure in response to attacks on commercial shipping.

In a Truth Social post on the 22nd, Trump said that every Iranian attack on a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz would be met with the destruction of an Iranian bridge or power plant.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded the following day, declaring that Tehran’s defensive policy was “an eye for an eye.” He warned that any attack on Iran, including its infrastructure, would trigger what he described as a powerful and decisive response.

Rubio Promises a Stronger American Response

Secretary of State Marco Rubio answered Araghchi while attending an ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting in the Philippines.

“Their foreign minister says their policy is an eye for an eye. Our president’s policy is an eye for a head.”

Rubio’s message was clear: the Trump administration will not limit the United States to equal retaliation. Any Iranian attack could bring a far more damaging American response.

Rubio also warned that Iran would pay a “very heavy price” for its actions. He said Tehran continues to seek negotiations with Washington through both direct and indirect channels, despite its public threats.

Iran Fires Back

Araghchi later accused members of the Trump administration of ignoring reality and focusing on the 2028 presidential election. He also claimed that American military pressure would make negotiations more difficult and costly.

The exchange highlights the growing tension surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes. Iran has repeatedly used threats against international maritime traffic as leverage against the United States and its allies.

The Trump administration is signaling that attacks on shipping will not be tolerated. Tehran now faces a clear warning: targeting international vessels could bring consequences far greater than the damage Iran attempts to inflict.
