U.S. Launches Airstrikes on Iranian Military Sites After Strait of Hormuz Attack
The United States carried out airstrikes against Iranian missile, drone, and radar facilities after Iran attacked a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, an incident Washington says violated the recent ceasefire agreement. President Donald Trump condemned the attack and warned that Iran would face consequences.
The United States launched airstrikes against Iranian military targets on Thursday after Iran attacked a commercial cargo ship transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM).
U.S. Responds to Ceasefire Violation
CENTCOM said the operation targeted Iranian missile storage sites, drone facilities, and coastal radar installations in response to what it described as an unjustified attack on a civilian merchant vessel. The military said Iran's actions represented a clear violation of the ceasefire agreement reached earlier this month.
"Iran's attack on a commercial vessel was a clear violation of the ceasefire and threatened freedom of navigation through one of the world's most important maritime trade routes," CENTCOM said.
Trump Condemns Iran
President Donald Trump criticized Iran's actions before the strikes were announced, calling the attack a "clear and foolish violation" of the ceasefire. When asked about a possible U.S. response, Trump told reporters, "You'll find out." Roughly an hour later, CENTCOM confirmed the airstrikes.
Background
The incident occurred nine days after a U.S.-Iran ceasefire memorandum officially entered into force following negotiations earlier this month. The agreement called for an immediate and permanent end to military operations while both sides continued talks over Iran's nuclear program and sanctions relief.
According to U.S. officials, Iran attacked the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz, prompting the American military response.
Regional Security Concerns
The Trump administration has emphasized that maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz remains a vital U.S. national security objective. CENTCOM said American forces will continue escorting and supporting commercial shipping while monitoring Iranian compliance with the ceasefire agreement.
Although the U.S. strikes appear intended as a warning rather than the start of a broader conflict, regional tensions remain high. Any Iranian retaliation could place the fragile ceasefire at serious risk and further destabilize the Middle East.
